Ham radio is a very powerful capability but some choose not to take the exam. Below are less capable alternatives to two way voice and data communications that don't require an exam. MURS is VHF (Very High Frequency) @ 2 Watts and no license is needed. GMRS is UHF (Ultra High Frequency) and up to 50 Watts (some channels mobile) 5 Watts (handheld). The license is $35.00 good for 10 years, valid for the applicant and immediate family. In times of disaster, communications are important. The downside to these radio services is that the City DEM (Department of Emergency Management) does not monitor these services.
