GMRS

GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) is a regulated FCC (Federal Communications Comission) channelized two way radio service available to any adult over the age of 18. There are 22 channels in the UHF (Ultra High Frequency) range around 462 MHz and 467 MHz. GMRS stations can expect a communications range of one to twenty-five miles depending on station class, terrain and repeater use. Some GMRS channels can use 5 W of transmit power while some which overlap with FRR (Family Radio Service) are limited to 0.5 W. Other GMRS channels can use up to 50 W ot transmit power and can include repeaters. The GMRS radio service requires a license to operate but unlike an Amateur (Ham) Radio license, there is no exam required. You simply pay a $35.00 fee for a 10 year license. The license will cover the licensee and his/her family.  See the link under Other Resources for a cheat sheet on how to apply for a GMRS license.
